HARMONY GROVE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

HISTORY   1881-2006

Harmony Grove United Methodist church history dates back to the year of 1836, when the church was organized and built, the church was named Crossroads Church.  Following a destructive fire in 1859, a second church was built on land donated by William Nesbit; this church was named Mount Calvary.  Following another fire the church made its final move to its present location at 50 Harmony Grove Road in 1881, when Jessie Lowe Brand donated the land for its use.  Harmony Grove was officially organized in 1882.  The first building was constructed in 1883.  The members built a white wooden frame church with two doors on the front.

In 1936 the old Braden School House was closed and torn down.  The lumber was given to our church by the county.  The bell from the Braden School was also given to the church and currently is in front of our church by the main sidewalk.

May 11, 1941 when all improvements to the white church were finished, Bishop Moore dedicated the renovations.  This was Mother’s Day and it became the traditional Homecoming day for Harmony Grove for many years.  We still host our Homecoming in May.

A new sanctuary was completed and dedicated in 1965, it is now called Pollard Hall, named after Rev. Randy Pollard who served as our pastor from 1963 to 1971.

In 1979 the Activities Building was built, it is named The Berrier Building after Rev. Bob H. Berrier who served as our pastor from 1976 to 1982.

September 1991, we had a groundbreaking ceremony for the current sanctuary building.  This building was completed and dedicated in 1993.
